Chapter 21

When they got back to the sheriff’s department, Special Agent Thomas was just getting out of his vehicle.

“What have you been up to?”

“I paid a visit on a couple by the name of Bob and Linda Martin,” Thomas replied. “They’re rehabbers that worked with Roni Boyd.”

“I know Bob and Linda,” Weber replied. “Nice folks. He teaches science at the high school and his wife is the assistant principal at the middle school.”

“They seem like good people,” Thomas agreed. “They said they got involved in animal rehabbing several years ago when Roni was coming to the schools with animals. They seem to specialize in small mammals like squirrels and rabbits, and they have two raccoons there at their place now.”

“Did they have anything of interest to say about what happened to Roni?”

“They were both pretty shook up about it, Dottie,” Thomas told her. “They said that the last time they talked to her was a week or so ago when she brought them one of the raccoons. She was telling them that she was going to be on vacation for a while, and they said they asked her what would happen when she got her transfer to Prescott and if the animal rehab program would still be going on. She told them another forest ranger by the name of Lauralee Tabor that they also work with would be picking up the slack for a while, but that there were a couple of other rangers that they were hoping to bring into the program.”

“I don’t suppose they had any idea who might be causing our victim any problems, did they?”

Thomas shook his head and said, “No, Parks, they didn’t. But they did mention that there was a rehabber that Ranger Boyd recently took out of the program. A woman by the name of Tarah Schaeffer. Do you know who that is, Sheriff Weber?”

Weber didn’t know who Tarah Schaeffer was, but the name sounded familiar to him. “Let’s go inside and ask Mary. She knows everybody around here,” he said.

Inside the office, Mary said, “Tarah lives out on Arrowhead Road, Jimmy. You know Ray Schaeffer, right? She’s his stepdaughter.”

“Sure, I know Ray,” Weber said. “I knew Mary Ann had a son and daughter from a previous marriage, but I don’t know anything about them. Didn’t we have a domestic disturbance call out there a while back?”

“Yeah, we did,” Mary told him. “The stepson got into an argument with his mother, and Ray stepped in and the young man took a swing at him. Coop and Dolan took the call, and the boy got real mouthy with both of them. They wound up arresting him for domestic violence against his stepfather.”

“What became of that?”

Mary shook her head and said, “I can’t keep track of all that stuff, Jimmy. But I do recall that when they brought him in he was cussing out the dispatcher. I think Dolan threatened to slap him upside the head if he didn’t stop with the filthy language.”

“Do you remember what his name was?”

“Of course I remember that,” Mary told him.
